Cognitive Relay (CR), a part of secondary system, is a promising product for the future wireless systems that provides capacity improvements in the network. CR acting as an Overlay System provides the spatial reuse of the spectrum. CR senses the primary receiver outside and uses them to provide access for indoor devices (ID) operating inside the building. CR has the goal of satisfying the interference constraint at the primary receiver and at the same time optimizes its resources.

The previous work investigated the wireless channel models for indoor-indoor and outdoor-indoor at the ISM 2.4 GHz band. The interference and capacity constraints were considered and primary user channels were deployed over the hardware USRP. The analysis however was done by choosing a constant transmit power at the CR for all the primary user channels.

The task of the thesis will be to investigate the scenario where CR can adapt its transmit power in order to satisfy the interference constraint at the primary receivers and optimize the network capacity. This technique corresponds to a typical water-filling that needs to be investigated theoretically and analyzed through simulation using MATLAB.
